Each Time

His eyes followed her movements from across the bustling café. It had been many years sense he had any sort of close contact with other people, and this woman had interjected herself into his life. It was strange to have someone about all the time now days. His eyes flicked away to watch the softly falling snow.

She had followed him of course, though she had no real idea for his true reasons for retreat. Likely, she thought him shy, unsociable or perhaps a combination of both. However, it was a more complex matter than that.

It was something that for the longest while he had managed to suppress, always in the background, but never something to think upon. However, now it had been ripped to the fore. In her he found constant reminder of the other. The one whom he had once had a sort of fondness for, though perhaps Reina wouldn’t have thought so.

Wolf felt no true remorse for her, it was impossible after what she had done to force his hand. Rather, it was something akin to pity that was attached to the memories. For that which could have been, that which had been denied, and all that had happened in its stead.

Again he turned slightly to look at her to find she was already doing likewise. He quickly looked away, caught in the act. Somehow she had come to find the truth of his past in part. He couldn’t fathom why she had continued her pursuit afterwards. Perhaps in some way she felt sorry for him, it was a regretful decision he would have to live with forever.

While she had turned to say something to one of her friends sitting near her he took the opportunity to slip away again. The cold did not bother him, sometimes it was better to be numb rather than feel. At least temporarily anyways, until the next time she found him and reminded him.
